As WW II intensified, the demand for the essentials of war, i.e., men, weapons and supplies, also intensified. Everything afloat was already in use, so thousands of Liberty ships and hundreds of Victory ships were built.

The Maritime Commission designed the "General" class of troop ships for transporting 5,000 troops, their equipment and every-day needs during the voyage.

Constructed and launched May 2, 1943, by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. of Kearney, NJ, the AP-111 was the second of eleven "General" ships built during the following two years. Mrs. George C. Marshall broke the champagne on the ship's bow.
